Metal vs PVC
INTRODUCTION
Your first critical design decision is the type of ducting material. Ideally metal ducting is preferred over plastic but if low cost is your primary concern PVC pipe is hard to beat. Of course the DustDog ecosystem support either or both!
The biggest issue most people mention for PVC pipe is static discharge risk. For commercial and industrial applications this is a significant factor and regulations might even prohibit PVC piping.
PVC is non-conductive and accumulates static electricity. This can result in shocks when touching pipes However if you can’t afford metal ducting we can show you how to work around this problem by grounding your plastic pipes.
Cost Comparison
Material | Cost / ft | Source | Notes |
4” Nominal Diameter | |||
PVC Schedule 40 | $1.80 | Heavier, more expensive
Sewer & Drain | $1.33 | Best option for PVC
Spiral Metal Duct | $3.70 | Overall #1 choice
Snap-Fit Metal Duct | $2.05 | Difficult to work, noisy
Quick-Clamp Duct | $8.99 | If you can afford it |
